Easy Peppermint Hot Chocolate recipe. Way better than hot chocolate mix, this creamy homemade hot chocolate is the perfect drink on a cold day.
New years is just around the corner, and it gets a girl wondering: what are my resolutions? What do I want to accomplish during the year of 2012? Every year my resolution is the same, and every year I fail within the first week.
You are probably thinking that I’m dreaming big. To be a vegetarian, or to go to the gym every day. But no. I’ve been trying to start small, and I cannot get past this one stage. My new years resolution is, yet again, to floss everyday. The compliment I hear most from people is that my teeth are gorgeous. All from flossing maybe 50 times in my lifetime.
But this year I am determined. I have bought a lot of floss, and have even stashed some in my purses, so I will have no excuse. And I think especially need to take care of my teeth at this time of year. Do you know how many sweet treats I have indulged in this holiday season?
Actually, don’t guess. I think I would prefer not to know. I will try to remain ignorant as I drink this hot chocolate jam-packed with chocolate and sugar that I will forget what I was thinking about in the first place.
Peppermint Hot Chocolate Ingredients
You just need a couple of simple ingredients to make this peppermint hot cocoa recipe. All you need is:
- whole milk
- white sugar
- dark chocolate
- peppermint extract
- whipped cream
- candy cane pieces
Tips
Don’t have candy canes? Peppermint candies work just as well. Just place the peppermint candy in a large ziplock bag and use a rolling pin to crush the candy. The peppermint candy pieces adds an extra hint of peppermint flavor that sends this drink over the top.
Add your favorite toppings. No need to use whipped cream. I love this hot chocolate with mini marshmallows or a scoop of ice cream on top.
Variations
Make it vegan. Instead of using regular milk, try swapping it for oat milk or full-fat coconut milk.
Switch up the chocolate. When making the melted chocolate, try switching out the dark chocolate. I have tried this recipe with white chocolate, semi-sweet chocolate and milk chocolate chips, and they all worked out perfectly. Or try a combination of chocolate flavors!
Swap out the sugar. Instead of adding the granulated sugar, try other sweeteners! I love maple syrup, brown sugar or a couple of little packets of stevia.

I love homemade hot chocolate – it's such a wonderful treat! I make it each year when my husband and I go out to look at all the Christmas lights in our neighborhood a few days before Christmas. Peppermint is my favorite way to change it up! Yum!
