The first time I tried beer was when I was maybe 8 years old. It was during my I Love Coca Cola phase. It was a Christmas party. All my parents’ friends were invited, and my friends. Me and my dad were getting the drinks. He pulls me aside and says “I poured you your Coca Cola, here. It tastes really good today, try it.”
Of course being 8 and in love with sugar, I took the glass and gave it a long chug. I almost coughed my lungs out. When I was expecting a sugar party in my mouth, I tasted the most bitter thing I could have imagined. I look up at him with wide eyes, and say “this Coca Cola tastes like bread batter”
Of course my dad got a talking to by my mother about never giving beer to unexpected minors, but to this day, I can’t stand the taste of beer. But I have tried bread batter, and even though I can’t stand that taste either, it does not in fact taste like beer.
I love this bread. I don’t know why I have never made bread more often, homemade bread is just fantastic. Now I can make my boring sandwiches taste like the greatest creation of the day. And what could be better than that?

What you’ll need:
-2 cups warm water
-1/4 cup white sugar
-1 1/2 tablespoons active dry yeast
-1 1/2 teaspoons salt
-1/4 cup vegetable oil
-5 cups bread flour
Directions:
1. In a large bowl, dissolve the sugar in the warm water and stir in yeast. Let stand until the yeast resembles a creamy foam
2. Mix in the salt and vegetable oil. Slowly add the flour one cup at a time, and knead the dough until smooth and elastic, around 6-8 minutes.
3. Place the dough in a well oiled bowl, and turn to coat. Cover with a damp cloth and allow to rise until doubled, around 1 hour.
4. Punch the dough down. Knead for a few minutes and divide into half. Place into two loaf pans and allow to rise for 30 minutes.
5. Bake at 350˚F for around 30 minutes.

Bread batter does taste a bit beer-like – it's the yeast talking! I haven't baked bread for ages, and keep saying I need to. I should just do it, don't you think? Nice post – thanks.

It is good to make our own bread at home and we feel the satisfaction once it came out from the oven. I have yet to make white bread and guess it is time for me to do so when I saw yours.

Hi Cathleen, your bread look excellent. Love the texture so soft and fluffy. I love to baked my own bread too, enjoyed the aroma fragrant scent… nothing beat the homemade bread.
Have a great week ahead, regards.

I'm truly not a fan of beer myself, but I do like it in bread batter and certain marinades too!

I actually love the way bread smells kind of yeasty, so theoretically I might like beer. I never really got it though. I find it bitter too. Bread is amazing though, yours especially!

I never cared so much for beer for a long time… Until I met my boyfriend and he introduced me to good beer. Your bread looks like the real thing from bakeries! Great job Cathleen!

I'm glad I'm not the only one that hates beer or lager. It really is disgusting and I totally agree that it tastes weirdly yeasty. I can remember asking my dad to try some of his lager one day and hating it. As I got older and got to the age where drinking was cool (probably 14/15) I tried it again. I wanted to like it so tried making lager and blackcurrent. In the end I ended up with 3/4 blackcurrent and 1/4 lager and it still made me gag so I gave up trying to like it. I'm just an expensive sprits person.
The bread looks so delicious and perfectly baked. Looks exactly like posh bread you pick up from the bakery and the sandwich looks delicious with your bread. When you were talking about beer and I saw the bread, I was thinking you might've made beer in your bread. Glad you didn't. That might be fantastic for those beer lovers but for you and I, it's like hell on earth.

My dad was always offering me sips of beer. I thought it was disgusting then and still don't have a taste for it. But fresh baked bread…ahh, that is another thing. Delicious! Good for you for trying it. It looks great!
