This moist Peanut Butter Mug Cake is one of my favorite dessert recipes! It is the perfect treat to satisfy your sweet tooth.
Mug cakes: my new obsession.
Seriously. This week I have made multiple mug cakes. The first mug cake recipe that I made was a failure, but the others.. Well those others have turned out great. I think I’m practicing having barely any kitchen appliances for when I move to Toronto. Sadly I think I’m going to have to leave my food processor and ice cream maker here. The only thing about that is that I almost want to leave behind all my clothing and take all my baking stuff. Is that weird?
But back to this cake. I made this for breakfast (because who DOESN’T want cake for breakfast? Seriously?) and let me tell you, it filled me up and kept me going for a long time.
This might be the best and worst quality of a mug cake. The fact that it takes less than 5 minutes to make a simple cake ready for you to eat? That’s dangerous. This should come with its own warning label. But this is the perfect dessert to make when a sweet craving strikes. It is made in just minutes, which makes it an easy recipe for when you are craving a peanut butter cake.
Peanut Butter Mug Cake Ingredients
You just need a couple of simple ingredients to make this easy peanut butter mug cake recipe. All you need is:
- all-purpose flour
- white sugar
- baking powder
- large egg
- creamy peanut butter
- milk
- oil
Tips
Make sure that you use a microwave-safe mug. There are so many times that I make an amazing mug cake but I use a coffee mug that is not microwave safe. This results in the mug overheating, and your cake to occasionally get a rubbery texture.
Keep an eye on your microwave cake. Different microwaves heat food with a different microwave power. If this is the first time making a mug cake, watch it carefully while it is cooking. Once the cake rises past the top of the mug, pause the microwave for a couple of seconds then turn it back on. You may need to change your cooking time accordingly for next time you make it.
Variations
Switch up the kind of peanut butter you use. Instead of smooth peanut butter, you can use either crunchy or natural peanut butter. You can also use peanut butter powder if that’s all you have on hand. Or any nut butter, such as cashew or almond butter.
Add in some mix-ins. I love adding in a tablespoon of chocolate chips or peanut butter chips. But you can add whatever mix-ins you have on hand.
Top the cake with something decadent. I love adding a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top to make it the perfect single serving dessert. But if I just want a little more of a peanut butter treat, I will add an extra drizzle of peanut butter on top.

How convenience!? But it could be "dangerous" for me as it is so easy to prepare….I can't probably do a super quick "clean up" before anyone finds out as well! hahaha…

I just moved into my sisters house for a month, left most of my clothes behind and bought a giant box of bakeware instead 🙂 I'm a bit funny about mug cakes, sometimes they're great, sometimes they're horrific. Will have to try this one!

How’s the texture on this? I’m another that can be picky with mug cakes. I think it’s the texture the microwave gives the cake. Looks delicious and moist though.
They are dangerous when they’re so easy and quick to make. I’m laughing you had it for breakfast though. Don’t even tempt me.

It was very nice and moist. I agree, I have had some very rubbery mug cakes, but I have made it twice in the span of a week. It's just so easy, I couldn't help it!

Cathleen, I think mug cake is a good idea. You can just make one portion and not bake a whole cake. I've got to try it someday 🙂

Mug cakes for the win! Looks pretty tasty, anything with peanut butter makes me happy though! 🙂
I know what you mean about leaving your clothes behind over baking stuff, when I moved house, the first thing I set up was the kitchen, and then I realised I'd left my wardrobe boxes at home… I was so anxious to get all my equipment set up!

I find mug cakes to be quite dangerous, because the easier they are to make – the more I'll make them! Though…this looks so good. Love all things PB.
