This Easy Meatballs in Dijon Gravy recipe is the perfect quick and simple weeknight dinner idea. The mustard sauce brings this dish to the next level!
Going to leave for Vancouver in 2 days, and we still have a lot of ground beef and assorted vegetables in our fridge. Help!
Good thing meatballs are one of the best freezer meals I know how to make. Now we will also have a meal when we come back on two weeks.
After all, coming back from a long period of no cooking requires some slow transitions into cooking for ourselves again. And this is going to taste great when we come back. Just as long as we don’t eat it all before we leave.
There was a time that the only meal John would cook for me was meatballs.
No, scratch that. It was either frozen meatballs from a bag, or another oven ready meal that you can find in the freezer area. Examples: pizza bagels and fries, chicken nuggets and fries.. basically anything, so long as there is fries.
Not that I minded. Clearly I still eat like a teenager. And not like one of my health conscious teenager students. Like a pizza and brownies kind of teenager.
But now that our freezer can basically only fit 3 frozen pizzas, we needed to fend for ourselves and actually learn to cook. Like, real person food.
We have definitely come a long way from our freezer meal days. Sure, we still have the odd frozen pizza (and fries) now and again, but mostly we stick to home cooked meals.
…or fast food.
But, enough about us. Let me talk about these meatballs!!
They are so ridiculously quick and easy to make, these can be whipped up super easily on busy weekday nights, or on lazy weekends. I am talking about meatballs, from start to finish, in 30 minutes.
That is basically like freezer meatballs timing! And it is 10x better for you, made from scratch!
Well, that is depending upon how much gravy you make..
You can eat this with mashed potatoes and veggies, or on top of spaghetti like I did in these pictures. Any way you enjoy these, you can be sure that you will be going back for seconds. And maybe even thirds.
Yeah.. I think that these meatballs are going to be gone long before we leave for Vancouver.

Haha, as if these will last until before you go, I bet they’re long gone by now! 😀 It looks absolutely delicious! Meatballs might be easy to make, but you can make so many different varieties, and the reward is so satisfying 😀
I hope you have a lovely time in Vancouver! xx
atasteofmadness
To be honest, they are almost gone 😉 Thanks!!

I think when you are young the freezer is your best friend, seriously who has time to cook when you are young. I lived of freezer meals and fast food. Now I am all grown up and old…lol I tend to home cook most of the time but still, on busy days the freezer can still be an old friend worth visiting. My fella would flip for this dish its right up his alley.

The freezer really is my best friend!

Just the right time for me to see this recipe as I have some meatballs in my freezer and have been wondering what to do with them. So far, the ways I know of cooking meatballs are: Italian style (with soffrito, tomato purée, beef stock, red wine, garlic, oregano and Parmesan, then served with pasta, or courgetti if I’m feeling virtuous), Swedish style (in gravy with Philadelphia Light mixed into it to make it creamy, then served with mashed potatoes and peas) or something I found on an American recipe site once which sounds vaguely Tex-Mex, although I gather from the measurements in your recipe that you’re from the other side of the pond, so you’ll probably raise an eyebrow at that (with black beans, pinto beans, BBQ sauce, smoked paprika, chilli flakes and cheddar, then served with sweet potato wedges). However, I might try a Dijon mustard sauce now you’ve given me the idea, and maybe think up some French accompaniments.

Ooh, your meatball combos sound fantastic! I really would love to give those a try!
Kdawn
This was perfect and tasty..I used everything but the beef broth. I used brown seasoning it’s a bit thicker so I didn’t need much.
atasteofmadness
So glad you liked it 🙂

I love meatballs but I still haven’t made them from scratch . This recipe sounds delicious. I’ll have to make it . My fiancé would probably eat the whole pot lol
atasteofmadness
Haha, mine almost did too!!
Michele
Delicious! One of my go to’s for over a year now.
atasteofmadness
That makes me so happy to hear 🙂

This recipe looks so interesting! I definitely love a good meatball dish for a party, especially in a non-traditional sauce. I tend to just go straight for the meatballs, though. I’ll have to try them over noodles!
atasteofmadness
Haha, eating plain meatballs is a-okay too. Thanks Samantha!
Stephanie
I’m drooling!! These look so delicious – I can imagine serving them with some egg noodles – yum!
atasteofmadness
Ooh, that sounds amazing! I will need to try out that idea. Thanks Stephanie!
Lisa

atasteofmadness
Thanks Lisa! I am addicted to these meatballs 🙂
Darcy
Why did you rate it 5 stars if you havent tried it?
Lauren
I agree. Has anyone actually tried the sauce?
Mirlene
These look so incredibly good. Our family loves meatballs. surprisingly, I like meatballs with salads – weird, I know. Especially when it’s Cesar salad. 🙂 These sauce looks so rich! YUM! I would love to try this recipe.
atasteofmadness
I have never tried meatballs with salad before! Thanks for the idea!
Gilda
Can the sauce be pre made and frozen also?
atasteofmadness
I have never tried it premade and frozen, but I am sure it would work well. Let me know if you give that a try!
MrDisco
i’ll have to try out that meatball recipe
atasteofmadness
You really do. It is one of my favourites 🙂
Ben Myhre
These meatballs look very good. And pizza is a different story, as almost all pizza tastes freaking awesome, but I suspect you will find that many of the frozen/quick stuff you used to like will start to taste not so good.
Geez, I don’t think I have bought a hamburger helper in YEARS and the last time I did I wondered what I ever saw in it. I can make the same thing for pretty much the same cost and time, but tastes so much better.
atasteofmadness
Right??? I totally agree with you Ben!
Ashley Walterson
Love this idea! I’m usually stuck with the same old meatballs either in spaghetti sause or mushroom gravy, so this is a really nice addition to my cookbook.
atasteofmadness
Thanks Ashley! I love how easy they are.
Lara
This looks great, hubby is a meatball freak, & I generally don’t care for them, too meaty, & I don’t like tomato sauce. I’ve tried making some veggie balls, or veggie&meatballs they haven’t gone over well, if I like them, he doesn’t. These are still all meat, but look like something I could handle, with that Dijon sauce. Can’t wait to try. What size do you make you meatballs, I prefer small, like less than an ounce, but I usually bake, hubby makes HUGE ones 2-3 ounces & he prefers pan fried like you have done. I know when Pan frying larger/fewer is easier, about how many do you usually make from the recipe?
atasteofmadness
I made mine with a cookie scoop actually. It varies really how many I make, but it makes quite a bit!
Sarah
This sounds delicious! How would it work with ground lamb?
atasteofmadness
Ground lamb would be amazing in this!
Cathy Harrell
Do you have any idea of nutrition in these?
Calories, fat, carb, fiber etc?..
atasteofmadness
No, sorry. I will try to add nutrition labels to this post soon though. I will let you know when I have them up!
Leslie
Can’t wait to try these! When I cook meatballs, I usually do it in a very hot oven on a cookie sheet lined with parchment. No frying mess and they are still nice and browned.
atasteofmadness
Let me know how they go! That sounds like a great way to do meatballs 😉
ET
What a good recipe. Thanks for sharing it. I added some spicy seasoning to it to give it a kick after it was cooked. So good! Thank you.
atasteofmadness
I am so glad you liked it! Spicy seasoning sounds like a great addition.
isabelle
easy and good but not enough mustard taste for me – i added a little more as i was making the sauce (and some salt) but still not enough – would up the amount and add some other flavorings
atasteofmadness
Thanks for the feedback Isabelle, and for giving it a try 🙂
Andrea Brener-Brose
Loved this recipe! As did our 8 year old! I used ground turkey and chicken broth and was fantastic. Will absolutely be part of our dinner rotation. Thanks!
atasteofmadness
Thank you so much Andrea! I am so glad you enjoyed it! Also, thanks for the suggestion! I will try it with turkey next time!
Crissy
Absolutely delicious! My package of ground beef wasn’t quite 1.5 pounds, it was about 1.22 so I didn’t add the full amounts of everything else! The gravy was delicious, I added 2 Tbsp of dijon mustard, served this with mashed potatoes, peas, and bread! This would be delicious with egg noodles too! Would definitely make again!
atasteofmadness
Yay!! I am so glad to hear this! That combo sounds amazing. I will need to try it with mashed potatoes and peas 🙂
Rachel
These are so easy to make and delicious! I used 1lb of beef and cut back on the rest of the ingredients and they still turned out lovely. Thank you !

I am so glad it turned out well for you Rachel 🙂
Brigi
I just prepared it, fantastic!

Making the meatballs tonight using ground turkey. They smell delicious. I’m excited to taste them.
atasteofmadness
Yay! Sounds good with turkey. Let me know how it turns out.
GingerB
This is probably just personal preference but as written, while I LOVED the meatballs, after tasting the gravy I felt it was very bland.. almost flour tasting so I ending up adding about 1/4 cup real maple syrup to it (I thought it would go well with the all spice and nutmeg in the meatballs) and we loved it with mashed potatoes! the meatballs were great even on their own and I never would of added those spices to meatballs so I will add this to my dinner rotation but with the added syrup.
atasteofmadness
I will have to try it with your substitutions. That sounds very tasty!
Katy
How many servings does this make? Looks delicious!
atasteofmadness
It depends on if you are eating them with pasta or alone. I would say 4-5 servings
Katy
Thank you! Can’t wait to try it!
atasteofmadness
Thanks Katy 🙂
Tiffany
This recipe was good, however it did not have a mustard taste at all. I even doubled the amount
Nicole Hagedorn
I have to agree with the other users stating that this recipe was not only bland, but I could NOT taste the mustard at all. It was okay as written, and I added 3/4 teaspoon salt to the sauce along with Parmesan cheese. Like Lauren’s idea of adding caramelized onions and red peppers, but think I would also add mushrooms as well. DEFINITELY needs more mustard – a LOT more – at LEAST 2 Tablespoons. Will make it again with revisions. Appreciate the recipe, so thanks for the “starter”, as it is a more unique dish.
jackieC
Why so mean?? Someone was kind enough to publish a great recipe, there is no need to be so critical. You may not have liked them but I am positive others did. Please try to be less offensive!
Anne H
Absolutely delicious no criticism whatsoever. Has been added to my most favourite recipes and it’s so easy, thank you
atasteofmadness
That makes me so happy! Thanks Anne!
Lisa
You said this is a good freezer meal. Can you let me what what you do and how you reheat it?
atasteofmadness
In the step where you freeze the meatballs, you can freeze them overnight (or however long you want) and defrost it when you want to cook it.
Lisa
Can you tell me how to freeze and reheat?
Lauren
I made my own meatball recipe and then made this sauce. It was a little bland for my taste so I added sugar, fresh parsley, caramelized onions, fresh Parmesan cheese, whole grain mustard, thyme, garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper and red pepper for more spice. It was absolutely delicious!
atasteofmadness
Sounds so good!!
Cindy
I’ve made these several times! They are a favorite of my husbands. Tonight I served them with garlic smashed potatoes and roasted asparagus. Thanks for a delicious and easy dish! Love it!!
atasteofmadness
That makes me so happy to hear! So glad you like them! 🙂
Joyce Schlosser
I had some frozen meatballs in the freezer and was planning on making them for dinner tonight. I just wasn’t in the mood for tomato sauce. I checked pinterest and found this recipe. Wow. This turned our delicious. The only variation I made (Only one for me is pretty unusual) was to add an additional teaspoon of the Dijon mustard. This is definitely a keeper and I will make it again and again.
atasteofmadness
That makes me so happy to hear!!
HoneyBunny20
Agree with others reviews, Didn’t taste the mustard. For those of you who tweaked the amount, how much did you add? Is 2 tablespoons enough?
Linda
This was delicious, but I did make a couple changes to increase the flavor. I increased the Dijon mustard – I just dumped to taste, but probably used 4-6 Tablespoons. I also added 5 beef boullion cubes as I accidentally purchased low sodium beef broth. Might not need those with regular broth I also added a can of Mushrooms because we love mushrooms. Served over mashed potatoes and with frozen peas. Will definitely make this again. I made them ahead, then just heated on the stove to quickly get dinner on the table. Reheated well.

Excellent recipe! Hubby gobbled it up. No modifications needed. Served it over spaghetti and with a side Cesar salad.
atasteofmadness
That makes me so happy to hear! Glad it was a hit with your hubby 🙂
Pam
These look delicious – I am not able to have dairy – do you think they would work with almond milk?
atasteofmadness
Yes, I think that would work!
Lola
I add 1tbsp brown sugar to the gravy. Takes it to the next level!
We love this so much, it’s on our dinner rotation
MJ
Is there anything more annoying than tons of comments from people who didn’t make the recipe? Instant wet blanket.
