Easy Hot Chocolate Oatmeal recipe. This bowl of porridge is like eating dessert for breakfast. A perfect quick and simple morning meal.
When I was growing up, I used to have hot chocolate every night before I went to bed.
It was a ritual that I truly believed helped me go to sleep faster. And every night I would read the slogan off of the label on our container of hot chocolate. It said: A Warm Hug on a Cold Day.
That slogan is what I think about every time I drink a hot chocolate. And in times like these with everyone talking about the coronavirus, a warm hug is really what I need right now.
(Though no one wants to actually make physical contact with you these days).
This morning, my school closed down due to COVID-19 concerns. That means that I am working from home, and doing video conferences with my students so that I can actually teach them something. So this Hot Chocolate Oatmeal is the warm hug that I need this morning.
I have made plenty of mocha oatmeals before, but a reader pointed out that I have never made a hot chocolate one.

So this oatmeal was a long time coming. I bought a bag of marshmallows specifically for this purpose. I don’t know about you, but I don’t think that hot chocolate is complete without either marshmallows or whipped cream. But more times than not, I am craving marshmallows in my hot chocolate. I guess it is just what I grew up having.
What do you need to make this Hot Chocolate Oatmeal?
Not much more than if you were making regular hot chocolate. All you need is:
- milk
- old fashioned oats
- chia seeds
- hot chocolate mix
- mini marshmallows
So if you are working from home or if you still need to go to work, this warm bowl of Hot Chocolate Oatmeal is definitely going to lift your spirits and get you ready to start the day.

Hot Chocolate Oatmeal
Ingredients
- 1 cup milk of choice
- 1/2 cup old fashioned oats
- 1 Tbsp chia seeds (optional)
- 2 Tbsp hot chocolate mix
- 3 Tbsp mini marshmallows
Instructions
- Heat the milk in a small saucepan on medium heat. Add in the oats, chia seeds and hot chocolate mix. Bring to a boil, and reduce the heat. Allow to simmer for 4-5 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- Pour the oatmeal into a bowl and top with mini marshmallows.

This is actually a very smart use for hot chocolate mix. It’s a healthy breakfast meal that feels like a dessert. 🙂
