I didn’t even know what to call these. Deconstructed apple cinnamon rolls? Super simple apple brunch mess?
How about let’s just call them good? And go ahead and make them for your mom.
I know I am always changing my most favourite breakfast/brunch/snack.. whatever I am posting on my blog at the moment, but you don’t understand. This is the recipe I have been searching for since I was a kid.
Let’s back up. When I was younger, my entire family would go to church every Sunday. And as a treat to look forward to after, we would go to this local bakery for something called “Sticky Twists”.
This place was known for their sticky twists. Going in early after church was the only way we would get them, because they sold out quickly. Often times we would wait in the bakery, with a coffee for my parents and juice for us kids, until they made some more. They were THAT good.
Over the years, the “Sticky Twists” turned into “Sticky Knots”, then they stopped selling them altogether. My family was shocked. I mean, the place was always sold out! How could they just stop selling them?!
So we stopped going. But since then, I have been trying to find something that recreated this Sunday treat. Something that would give me the taste of my childhood.
The ooey, gooey sticky cinnamon taste mixed in with a sticky knotted bun.. It is making me drool just thinking about it.
But finally, my search is over.
And while this isn’t tied into a knot and individually portioned, this tastes almost exactly like those sticky twists I had as a kid.
My search is finally over.
And now your search is finally over for a super simple, fairly quick brunch idea for your mom. My mom wasn’t even into sweet foods and yet she adored Sticky Twists.
I am almost sure you have the majority of these ingredients at home. Except for maybe the Pillsbury Grands Cinnamon Rolls and the apples.. but trust me. Get them. Any time either one of those are on sale. Super handy to have in a pinch.
This has already been picked clean at my house. And this weekend, I plan on making more. Let’s see if it will last over 24 hours this time.

Apple Cinnamon Sticky Buns
Ingredients
Sticky Buns
- 2 medium apples, peeled, cored and diced
- 1 Tbsp brown sugar
- 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1 Tbsp water
- 1 can Pillsbury Grands Cinnamon Rolls
Glaze
- 5 Tbsp salted butter, melted
- 1/3 cup brown sugar
Instructions
- In a medium saucepan, heat the apples, 1 Tablespoon brown sugar, cinnamon and water. Heat for around 3-5 minutes, stirring frequently until the apples are softened.
- Meanwhile, cut the uncooked cinnamon rolls into 6 pieces. It is okay if they fall apart. Sprinkle them evenly on the bottom of the prepared pie pan.
- Pour the apple mixture over the cut up cinnamon rolls.
- In a small bowl, mix together the melted butter and 1/3 cup brown sugar. Sprinkle evenly over the apple mixture.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 28-30 minutes, or until cooked through in the centre.
- Place the icing that came with the cinnamon rolls in a microwave safe bowl. Heat in the microwave for around 10 seconds, or until pourable.
- Pour the icing evenly over the baked cinnamon rolls. Serve warm.
