I have been sinking deeper and deeper into a state of sadness. Why, you all are probably wondering? Well, I have just finished grading the quizzes of the students in the first year calculus workshops that I’m running this year. And let me tell you, it wasn’t pretty.
I told myself at the beginning, right when I sat down to grade this huge stack in front of me, that I will not give anyone a zero. Turns out I had no choice. I mean, they are in university now, they should expect things to get tougher. I just didn’t want to discourage them by returning them their first quiz in calculus, and they got a zero. Maybe it will be more motivational than discouraging: showing them that they need to step it up if they want to pass.
I don’t know how teachers do it. Grade quizzes I mean. It shook me to the core, because I was just thinking about what my reaction would be if I saw a zero on anything I have written. I think I might have a mild heart attack.
So I had to make me a quick and easy pick me up. And a smoothie is the best hug on a rough day.
What you’ll need:
-1/2 cup blueberries, frozen
-1/2 cup blackberries, frozen
-1/2 cup plain greek yogurt
-1/4 cup milk
Directions:
1. Combine all ingredients in a blender, and puree until smooth.

Love your smoothie, looks delicious and healthy! Yes I can totally understand how sad it is to have to give your student a zero.. just can't understand why anyone would not put in effort especially when they are already in the Uni.

hi cathleen, you know i was just chking on some smoothies recipes too the last few days, i wish i can drink this more often as berries are rather quite expensive here. Hope you're feeling better now, sometimes we just got to do it even though it's difficult 🙂

Looks like you have your work cut out for you trying to help students improve their calculus scores. Thanks for the smoothie recipe i love it 🙂

I have a son who is 9 years old and as I am helping him to study, I see that school has become disproportionally demanding in each level. One would suppose that with all this knowledge, students would become more clever, have better grades, be better students. I think what happens is that we bombard our children with so much information that eventually they fail to grab it and become familiar with it. So, instead of improving their knowledge level, they become worse in every sense. I think this smoothie just made you feel better. It looks very refreshing!

Thanks for reminding me to make smoothies again! Kudos to you for being a math teacher, I wouldn't know where to start… calculus? What's that? I'll take a smoothie though, thanks!

Some students need a wake up call. With others, their brains may not have yet physically grown to the point where they can handle the sort of abstract thinking that calculus demands (this sounds weird and I've way oversimplified it, but just as our bodies grown as we mature, so do our brains – and some brains just haven't caught up with the chronological age of the person). Anyway, this smoothie looks delish. I love the combo of blueberries and blackberries – good stuff. Thanks.
