This classic Buckeyes recipe makes a great last minute dessert idea. Creamy peanut butter balls dipped in chocolate will be a new family favorite.
Ever since moving to the USA, I have been on a mission to try some classic recipes that are popular in this country. And when I discovered chocolate Buckeyes, I knew that I needed to recreate it.
These are the best Buckeyes I have ever had. To be fair, I have only ever had them once before. But I think that I will be having them over and over from now on.
What are Buckeye candies? They are sweet peanut butter fudge balls partially dipped in chocolate. The Buckeye candy is named after the Buckeye nuts from Ohio’s state tree, but this dessert is fairly popular in other states as well.
Buckeyes Ingredients
You just need a handful of ingredients to make this easy buckeye recipe. All you need is:
- creamy peanut butter
- salted butter
- vanilla extract
- powdered sugar (also called confectioners’ sugar)
- semi-sweet chocolate chips
- coconut oil
Equipment
- large mixing bowl
- hand or stand mixer
- sheet pan
- parchment paper
- small bowl
- medium or small cookie scoop
Tips
Storage: Store these buckeye balls in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 1 week. I would not recommend storing at room temperature, as the chocolate may melt depending on the temperature in your house.
What kind of peanut butter can I use? I would suggest either creamy or crunchy peanut butter, but make sure that it is the processed kind! Natural peanut butter is too runny for this recipe.
Variations
Switch up the chocolate coating. I love experimenting with different flavors to use for the melted chocolate. I have personally loved white and milk chocolate, but you can use whatever chocolate you have on hand.
Add some toppings. To jazz up these peanut butter Buckeyes, sprinkle on your favorite topping. I love adding chopped Reese’s Peanut butter cups, or festive sprinkles depending on the holiday. You can really add whatever you want on top of the balls, so get creative!
