Easy Dutch Apple Cake recipe. It is such a simple cake idea, making it the perfect treat for any time of the day.
It is finally apple season!
I have recently discovered that there are actually quite a lot of apple trees around the Madison area. So with all these trees, this means that we can have a nice fall family outing of apple picking!
Believe it or not, I have never gone apple picking before. Before when it was just me and John, we didn’t feel the need to go out and buy a lot of apples for 3x the price at the grocery store. But now that we have little children, we love making memories with overpriced experiences.
I have a feeling that with all of those apples, we will be making this Dutch Apple Cake quite often. And then next time we go, I might experiment with making a dutch apple pie recipe. At least I am saving money by making these treats at home rather than buying them at a local café. This cake makes the perfect afternoon treat to pair with a hot cup of coffee on a cool fall day.
Dutch Apple Cake Ingredients
This whole cake is made with mainly pantry essentials. All you need is:
- soft butter
- brown sugar
- large eggs
- vanilla extract
- all purpose flour
- baking powder
- ground cinnamon
- milk
- fresh apples, cut into thin slices
- white sugar
Tips
What type of apples to use? I would suggest either pink lady or granny smith apples for baking with.
Storage: Store any leftover cake in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days. If you wanted the cake to last longer, place it in the fridge for up to 5 days. In order to keep the cake from drying up in the fridge, wrap the slices in plastic wrap before placing in your container.
Add a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top of the cake. The warm vanilla flavor mixed with the cinnamon sugar makes for a delicious combination.
How to cut the apples. Thinly sliced apples are the most visually appealing on this cake, but you can just as easily to apple chunks or other shaped apple pieces for the layer of apples on top of the cake.
