Easy 4th of July Cake Balls recipe. Made with only 5 ingredients, this dessert idea is the perfect last minute treat for Independence day.
I am going on my third year of living in the US, and I somehow don’t have a red, white and blue recipe on my blog yet.
Well, it’s better late than never. Here’s my first attempt at making patriotic treats with these Easy 4th of July Cake Balls. Which, now that I think about it, doesn’t need to be made for July 4th. They are the perfect patriotic treat for memorial day, or any other US specific holiday.
Or, you know, a Thursday. Because I think that cake balls should be enjoyed to celebrate every occasion, even regular weekdays.
Easy 4th of July Cake Balls Ingredients
Key word here is easy, These patriotic cake balls use very minimal ingredients, which makes it perfect for a last minute recipe. All you need is:
- white cake mix
- frosting
- chocolate chips
- coconut oil
- red, white & blue sprinkles
Equipment
- baking sheet (or baking trays)
- parchment paper (or wax paper)
- baking pan
- stand mixer (or hand mixer)
- microwave-safe bowl
Tips
Storage: store these red, white and blue cake balls in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 1 week. You can also store them in the fridge for up to 2 weeks.
Can you freeze them? I actually prefer eating these cake balls frozen! You can definitely freeze these cake balls for up to 1 month to make them last longer. When ready to eat, either place in the fridge or eat directly from the freezer. I will say that when you freeze them and defrost them, condensation will form on the outside of the balls. If that doesn’t bother you and don’t want to eat all of the cake balls at once, this option is for you.
Variations
Make cake balls for any occasion. Instead of red, white and blue treats, swap out the type of cake mix, melted chocolate and sprinkles for whatever holiday you are celebrating. I love making a Valentine’s Day version by using red velvet cake mix, melted white chocolate chips and swap out the patriotic sprinkles for red and white ones.
4th of July Cake Pops: Instead of making balls, make red white and blue cake pops! Just make the recipe according to the recipe card, but before dipping into the chocolate coating, add in a lollipop stick or cake pop sticks into the cake pop balls.

4th of July Cake Balls
Ingredients
- 1 box white cake mix
- 1/3 cup frosting
- 1 cup semisweet chocolate chips
- 1 Tbsp coconut oil
- red, white and blue sprinkles
Instructions
- Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper. Set aside.
- Bake the cake according to the package instructions. Allow to cool completely.
- Using a stand mixer or a hand mixer, mix together the cooled cake and the frosting until fully combined. Set aside.
- Place the chocolate chips and the coconut oil in a microwave safe bowl and microwave in 30 second intervals, mixing until smooth.
- Form the cake mixture into balls using your hands. Dip them in the melted chocolate and place on the cookie sheet. Sprinkle with the sprinkles.
- Place the cookie sheet in the fridge or freezer until the chocolate is hardened.
Notes
- Placing the cake balls in the freezer to harden the chocolate will cause condensation when they are removed. If you want to be able to serve them at room temperature, allow the chocolate to harden in the fridge.
- Store in an airtight container on the counter for 1-2 days, or in the fridge for 1 week.

I love cake balls! I am always ready to whip some up for the grandkids and, let me tell you, they disappear fast! These cake balls came out so delicious and I sprinkled them with summery sprinkles so we could eat them right away. Also it was an easy enough recipe for my granddaughter to make with a little help.
