Easy Christmas Cake Balls recipe. This quick and simple last minute dessert idea is the perfect sweet treat for the holidays.
Tomorrow is the last day of school before the winter holidays!
Saying that I’m excited is an understatement. This has been a tough year, and this is a much needed break.
And since we got a snow day at my school today (another blessing!), I had the time to make these Easy Christmas Cake Balls.
What you need to make Easy Christmas Cake Balls
This recipe uses cake mix, making these cake balls a breeze. All you need is:
- 1 box of cake mix
- oil
- eggs
- frosting
- chocolate disks
- coconut oil
- Christmas sprinkles
That’s it!
Substitutions and Variations
In the recipe, I say to use Christmas Funfetti Cake Mix so that the inside batter will also be Christmas looking, but that is not necessary at all. Any cake mix will do in this recipe.
Also, for the cake portion, you can make the cake according to the box instructions, or make alterations to your cake preferences.
I have made similar cake balls for the 4th of July, Valentines day, birthdays… just switch out the sprinkles and/or the chocolate chips. This recipe is so versatile, feel free to switch it up to your liking!

Easy Christmas Cake Balls
Ingredients
- 1 box Christmas Funfetti Cake Mix
- 1 cup water
- 1/2 cup oil
- 3 large eggs
- 1/2 cup frosting
- 200 g dark chocolate disks
- 2 Tbsp coconut oil
- Christmas sprinkles
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F.
- In a medium bowl, mix together the cake mix, water, oil and eggs.
- Pour the batter into a lightly greased 9x13 inch baking pan. Bake in the preheated oven for 35 minutes. Allow to cool completely.
- Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper and set aside.
- Using a stand mixer, mix together the cooled cake and frosting until fully combined. Set aside.
- Place the chocolate disks and the coconut oil in a microwave safe bowl and microwave in 30 second intervals, mixing until smooth.
- Form the cake into balls using your hands. Dip them in the melted chocolate and place on the prepared cookie sheet. Sprinkle with the Christmas sprinkles.
- Place the cookie sheet in the fridge (or freezer) until the chocolate is hardened.
Notes
- I use avocado oil, but any neutral oil works.
- Allowing it to cool in the freezer results in a harder cake ball, and it will have to be kept frozen to avoid condensation forming. Allowing them to cool in the fridge will result in a softer cake ball that can be stored at either room temperature or in the fridge.
- Switch up the sprinkles to enjoy for any occasion

Using cake mix to make these cake balls was genius! They turned out perfectly, and looked so fancy, but were so easy to make! I know I’ll be making these again, probably for both Thanksgiving and Christmas! Yum!
