Spooky Halloween Eyeball Buckeyes. This easy Buckeye recipe is the perfect no bake treat to make for the spooky season.
This year has been the start of my Buckeyes obsession.
I have already made Buckeyes SO many times, my husband is questioning my sanity. We don’t even live in the Buckeye state. I just think that it is the most perfect dessert idea. So last week, when I was thinking about different ideas for recipes to make for Halloween, of course Eyeball Buckeyes were the first thing that came to my head.
These past couple of months have been extra busy with a toddler and a newborn, but because these Buckeyes come together in no time, I could make them a couple of times before Halloween. Now the only problem I have is trying not to eat the whole batch all by myself.
What are Buckeye Balls?
Buckeyes, or Buckeye candies, are balls of peanut butter dipped in melted chocolate. They are particularly popular in Ohio, as they resemble the nut of the Buckeye tree, which is their state tree.
Eyeball Buckeyes Ingredients
You only need 7 ingredients to make these Halloween Buckeyes. All you need is:
- creamy peanut butter
- unsalted butter
- vanilla extract
- powdered sugar (also called confectioners’ sugar)
- chocolate chips
- coconut oil
- candy eyes
Tips
Storage: Store Buckeyes in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 1 month.
Freezing. To freeze these Buckeyes, just place them in a freezer bag and freeze them for up to 3 months.
Use a different chocolate for the chocolate coating. I like either semi-sweet or dark chocolate as it resembles the classic recipe more. However, using melted white chocolate chips would make these peanut butter eyeballs look even more creepy.
Switch out the peanut butter. For a different texture, try using crunchy peanut butter. I also love using either cashew or almond butter. I would not recommend natural peanut butter, as that would make the peanut butter mixture a little too runny to form into balls.
Add some squiggly blood vessels. To make these Buckeyes even more spooky, get some red decorator frosting and make some veins on top of the peanut butter ball.

Eyeball Buckeyes
Ingredients
- 3/4 cup creamy peanut butter
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 2 cups powdered sugar
- 1 1/2 cups chocolate chips
- 2 tsp coconut oil
- 22 candy eyeballs
Instructions
- In a large bowl, cream together the peanut butter and butter until smooth. Mix in the vanilla extract.
- Sift in the powdered sugar. Mix until the mixture comes together.
- Using a medium cookie scoop, scoop the peanut butter mixture into balls. Smooth out the balls with your hands, then place the balls on a parchment paper lined baking sheet. Place in the freezer to harden.
- Add the chocolate chips and coconut oil to a microwave safe bowl. Microwave in 30 second intervals, mixing until smooth.
- Place a toothpick into a frozen peanut butter ball. While holding the toothpick, dip the peanut butter ball into the melted chocolate. Return to baking sheet and remove the toothpick. Dip the bottom of a candy eyeball into the chocolate and place it on the buckeye to cover up the toothpick hole. Repeat with the remaining peanut butter balls.
- Allow the chocolate to harden before eating, either at room temperature or in the fridge.
