Easy Funfetti Mug Cake recipe. This tasty dessert idea makes a great last minute treat. No eggs required, this can be made vegan.
I have finally settled in to Chicago!! Okay, so maybe “settled in” is a little bit too strong a term. We have a kettle, a microwave, a toaster and plates, mugs and bowls.
And a BED! Finally, after sleeping on the floor for 2 nights this bed was the best package I have ever received.
I won’t talk too much about my transition to Chicago here. I will mainly be sharing it on my personal Instagram because I am sure that you are all here for the food. And I don’t blame you!!
But with literally nothing to cook with in my house, what am I supposed to do??
Mug cake is an option? Mug cake is always an option.
PLUS, with the busy school year approaching, do we really have time to bake a full dessert? Also, it’s summer. No one wants to heat up the house by turning on the oven.
Did I convince you to make a mug cake yet? Because I think I have convinced me to make another one tonight.
This Vanilla Funfetti Mug Cake is perfect for when you want a funfetti cake, but don’t want to eat the whole cake. This is the perfect amount of cake that you can make in just minutes.
Funfetti Mug Cake Ingredients
This 5 minute funfetti mug cake is made with simple ingredients that you probably already have at home. All you need is:
- all purpose flour
- baking soda
- white sugar
- milk
- oil
- vanilla extract
- colorful sprinkles
- cream cheese
- unsalted butter
- powdered sugar
Tips
Make it vegan. Just replace the milk with dairy free milk and omit the frosting. Or make the frosting using vegan butter and cream cheese. Any kind of plant based milk works, but I particularly like either oat or almond milk in this recipe.
If this is your first mug cake, keep an eye on the cake in the microwave. Because the strength of individual microwaves varies significantly, you will need to watch the cake if this is your first time making a mug cake. The cook time will depend on how strong your microwave is. Make sure to check the cake every 10-15 seconds until the top of the cake is no longer liquid. Make note of how long it took, so that next time you will know roughly the cooking time for this mug cake.
Switch out the sprinkles depending on the special occasion. For birthdays, I love the rainbow sprinkles. But if you wanted to make this for Valentines Day or Christmas, you can use festive sprinkles in the cake, plus extra sprinkles in the frosting.

Funfetti Mug Cake
Ingredients
Cake
- 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/4 tsp baking soda
- 2 tsp granulated sugar
- 3 Tbsp milk of choice
- 1/2 Tbsp oil
- 1/4 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 1/2 tsp sprinkles
Frosting
- 1 oz cream cheese, softened
- 1 oz unsalted butter, softened
- 3/4 cups powdered sugar
- 1/2 Tbsp milk of choice
- 1/4 Tbsp vanilla extract
- sprinkles
Instructions
- In a microwave sage mug, mix together all of the cake ingredients except the sprinkles until fully combined. Fold in 1 tsp sprinkles. Sprinkle the rest on top.
- Microwave for around 1 minute, or until the cake looks done. Allow to cool for around 1 minute.
- Meanwhile, mix together the frosting ingredients except the sprinkles until smooth. Pipe on top of cooled cake and top with additional sprinkles, if desired.
Notes
- The frosting makes quite a lot. You could probably use this amount of frosting for 2 mug cakes.
- Make sure your mug is a good size. The cake will expand in the microwave then deflate. If your mug is too small, the cake could overflow.

Hey Cathleen, Well you convinced me to make a Mug Cake.
I tried your recipe but with coconut oil rather adding avocado oil.
Thanks for sharing the recipe. It was an easy bake. My kids love it, and started asking for more.

I love mug cakes, I don’t make them too often but they are definitely great for a quick cake fix when the need strikes.

I had nothing in the house to cook with so this was essential 🙂

I love that you put cream cheese frosting with this. I haven’t seen that with a mug cake before and that’s personally my favorite!!!

Home is were the mug and microwave are, haha! I love this colorful idea for a mug cake! I would love to make them with the kids too. I never tried baking with avocado oil, sounds interesting!

I was a little skeptical at first on how it would turn out. I’d never made a mug cake before. Was it ever good. I no sooner had one made for one grandson when I had to hurry and make another one for the other one. Then I had to see what all the fuss was about – I made me one. It was soooo good. I know what to make in a hurry for dessert.

I am so glad you liked it!! It is the best for last minute desserts 😉

I love the fact how you have avoid dairy and egg in the recipe. It can be great option for vegans like me. I am doing this soon!

I absolutely LOVE funfetti… Perhaps too much. I mean, given the opportunity, I could totally know back half a dozen funfetti cupcakes, so this sounds like the perfect I-have-no-self-control-and-may-need-some-help option for my funfetti cravings. Can’t wait to give it a try.
atasteofmadness
Haha, I hear you Claire!!
I have no self control, so this might be dangerous for both of us!!
Aline
This marks the beginning of the happy end of my life, now that I can microwave a cute cake I will no longer eat anything else LOL This is sooooo cute!!!!
atasteofmadness
Hahah. Plus barely any wait time 😉

I made this but it came out tasting bitter and soapy, like backing soda. Is it because I substituted some ingredients? I used olive oil as I had no avocado oil, and used soy milk instead of dairy.
atasteofmadness
Depending on the olive oil, it could be that. Soy milk also has a milder taste than dairy milk, and can cause the other ingredients overpower it a little more.
So sad that this recipe didn’t turn out for you!
