Easy and Healthy Double Chocolate Banana Muffins Recipe. Made with whole wheat flour and partly sweetened with applesauce, this makes a great nut-free snack
I know what you are thinking. There is no way that these Healthy Double Chocolate Banana Muffins are so good looking and are healthy. But it is true!! Maybe not THE healthiest thing you could be eating. Obviously grabbing an apple or a handful of berries would be a better choice than these muffins, but would it taste as good?
I think not.
Do you remember when I said that I made a truce with John to eat healthier? That was when we first started living apart in September. As you can see from my last couple of posts (mini egg nutella brownies, snickerdoodle pancakes, and HELLO chubby hubby Nutella cups) I am not doing such a great job. I just have too much of a sweet tooth. But John is flying in tomorrow for a visit, so I need to bake my best healthy snack recipe, and pretend I was doing this the entire time.
I am so glad he doesn’t read my blog. These muffins are a lot more healthy than what I have been making lately in my house.
These chocolate chip banana muffins are sweetened with bananas, applesauce and some granulated sugar. They are made hearty with whole wheat flour, and made delightful with chocolate chips sprinkled in.
It’s such a great recipe, I may not want to share with John tomorrow! I’m going to have to make a double batch in order to have enough to share with him.
Healthy Double Chocolate Banana Muffins Ingredients
The best part about these muffins is that they are made with wholesome ingredients that you probably already have at home. Minus maybe the ripe bananas. The simple ingredients that you need to make this healthy muffin recipe are:
- mashed bananas
- sugar
- eggs
- apple sauce
- all purpose flour and whole wheat pastry flour (or just use white whole wheat flour)
- cocoa powder
- salt
- baking powder & baking soda
- chocolate chips
Tips & Variations
Make these double chocolate muffins vegan. You can easily transform these muffins into vegan double chocolate banana muffins. Instead of regular chips, use vegan chocolate chips. To replace the regular eggs to make this recipe vegan, just make a flax egg. To make a flax egg, mix together 1 tablespoon of ground flax seed with 3 tablespoons warm water and set aside for 5 minutes.
Switch out the chocolate chips. I love swapping out the chocolate chips for all sorts of chocolate chips for a different chocolate flavor. Dark chocolate and white chocolate are some of my favorites, but use whatever ones you have on hand to satisfy your chocolate craving. Or do a mixture of all of them! Don’t forget to snack on them to get your chocolate fix as you are baking!
Make these muffins refined sugar free. Instead of adding granulated sugar, try replacing it with maple syrup. And use sugar free chocolate chips.
Storage: To store these healthy chocolate banana muffins, place them in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days. They can be stored in the fridge, however it will dry the muffins out a bit.
Don’t have overripe bananas? This recipe calls for very ripe bananas, but if your aren’t quite there yet, place them in the freezer overnight. In the morning, you will have brown bananas. Just defrost them in the fridge and squeeze them into the recipe. No mashing required!

If you say healthy,…I will have two!! Homemade muffins are the best. I would make a HUGE batch an put some in the freezer.

Good idea! In this case, eating 2 is way better than eating one 😉

These turned out great!!! I used 1/3 cup maple syrup instead of sugar and 1/2 cup of applesauce since I only had 2 bananas. Will definitely be making these again very soon 🙂
