Easy Homemade Nutella that is vegan and gluten free. Made with cocoa powder, and healhier than the kinds you will find in grocery stores.
Remember when I told you all that I would be making a lot of Nutella recipes?
Well that idea kind of fell on its face. I ended up taking the jar of Nutella out every so often, grabbing a spoon, and just eat a scoop. If I was feeling fancy, I would add some peanut butter.
I know, right? I’m super classy.
So now my Nutella stash is all gone, and I’m stuck at home, twiddling my thumbs and wanting some Nutella. The only thing is, I didn’t want the cashiers at the grocery store to see me day after day, buying a jar of Nutella (ok, maybe not THAT often…) so I decided to make it myself. I mean, come on! Everyone is doing it!
And since it is close enough to Christmas to make me pull my hair out thinking of Christmas gift ideas, I can cross at least one person off my list, as I will be making them this delicious Homemade Nutella. I’m not sure if I’ll ever buy Nutella again!
This can be used in place of regular Nutella in so many of my recipes. Some of my favourite are my Nutella Swirl Banana Muffins and my Chocolate Hazelnut Banana Bread.
And if you try this Homemade Nutella recipe, let me know! Rate it, leave a comment and tag me with #atasteofmadness on Instagram! I always love seeing what you are creating!

Ingredients
- 2 cups boiling water *see note
- 3 Tbsp baking powder *see note
- 1 cup hazelnuts *see note
- 12 oz chocolate chips
- 2 Tbsp canola oil
- 3 Tbsp powdered sugar
- 1 Tbsp cocoa powder
- 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
- 1/2 tsp salt
Instructions
- In a medium saucepan, bring the 2 cups water to a boil. Add the baking soda, then add the hazelnuts. Boil for around 3 minutes. The water will be black.
- Pour the hazelnuts into a colander and turn on the cold water faucet. Using your hands, roll off the peels.
- Preheat the oven to 350˚F.
- Boil 5 cups of water and pour in a medium bowl.
- Place the chocolate chips in a smaller bowl, and place it into the bowl full of water. Mix the chocolate chips until the mixture is smooth, making sure not to let the water mix in with the chocolate.
- Dry the hazelnuts, and bake in the preheated oven for around 12 minutes. Remove and let cool.
- In a food processor, pulse the hazelnuts until it forms a paste. Add the oil, sugar, cocoa powder, vanilla and salt, and process until mixture is smooth. Add the melted chocolate and blend well.
Notes
- If you are using hazelnuts with no skin, you do not need the water or baking powder. Plus, you will need to omit the first two steps of the recipe.

I would definitely eat this over a jar of Nutella anytime! I should get on this now that I have food processor, thanks to my mother-in-law.

I stopped buying Nutella for that very reason–Instead of baking with it, I just kept eating it! I've been meaning to try making my own one of these days–It seems easy enough!

This is something I keep telling myself I'm going to try but I haven't done it yet. You win the prize for being first.

Wow! This homemade nutella is such a treat….and I love that there’s no palm oils in this healthier version.

This wholly inappropriate but both my husband and our son want to marry you. They are Nutella FREAKS and died and went to heaven when they tasted this. Clearly I need to forgo the jarred stuff and make this instead.
