Easy Instant Pot Black Beans recipe. No need to buy canned beans when you can make it in your pressure cooker in under an hour.
What do you give babies to help with their iron consumption??
It seems like the only things I am finding right now is spinach, iron fortified cereal and beans.
Naturally, I am going through a LOT of beans. I don’t have the space for all those beans in my pantry, so it’s time to make some myself. And these Instant Pot Black Beans are easy peasy, I don’t know why I didn’t do this earlier. Plus they are ready in less time than it takes for me to run into the grocery store. This makes a healthy side dish, and is the simplest way that I now know to get my baby to eat more iron.
Instant Pot Black Beans Ingredients
You don’t need much at all! All you need is:
- 1 cup dry black beans
- 1/2 tsp sea salt
- 1 cup vegetable broth
- 2 cups water
That’s it!
How to use these beans
You can use these beans like you regularly would canned beans. Note that 1 (15 oz) can of black beans is equal to 1 1/2 cups of cooked, dried black beans.
Since this recipe makes 3 cups of cooked beans, this recipe is equivalent to 2 (15 oz) cans of black beans.
Not bad for only 1 cup dry beans! Plus, it saves so much more space than the canned version! Just make sure you use these beans within 3-5 days of cooking them, and store them in an airtight container in the fridge.
Variations
Use other beans! Not only does this Instant Pot Black Beans recipe make the perfect black beans, you can also use any other kind of dried beans that you have on hand. Just add a cup of beans of your choice instead of black beans and it should work for you! Just make sure that you have enough water to cover all of the beans in the pressure cooker.
Make spicy black beans. You can elevate this basic recipe by adding some spice to it! Once you are finished with the cooking process, drain the liquid then add either some taco seasoning or some chili powder.
Troubleshooting
Are the beans too hard? If you ended up with firmer beans, you may have forgotten to allow for natural release for the entire 20 minutes. Another issue could have been the temperature. Make sure that it is on high pressure, and that you check the cook times on the recipe card.
Are your beans lacking flavor? One way you can make more flavorful beans is to add in some bay leaves to the water. You may also be using hard water, which alters the flavor of the beans. For best results, use fresh water. I also love adding some sweet potatoes or some bell peppers to the cooked beans for more flavor.

I don’t love; I ADORE black beans. And buying them dry and cooking them to perfection at home provides you with the most delicious beans. You cannot compare beans cooked this way with canned ones. Thanks for this very clear tutorial.
