This Magic Shell is made with 3 ingredients, and is the perfect topping for ice cream. Made with coconut oil and chocolate chips, this can be made vegan.
Finally sharing my ice cream shenanigans! I have only recently pulled out my ice cream maker, and have been recipe testing like crazy.
Not that I’m complaining of course. Any excuse to taste test ice cream is easy work in my books. The problem is, my fiance’s request is always plain vanilla ice cream. And since I have already made so many vanilla ice cream recipes for this blog (you can see them here), I wanted to at least jazz up our regular vanilla ice cream. This is where the magic shell comes in.
I remember as a kid, I would beg and beg and beg my mom to buy the magic shell you can buy at the grocery store. At the time, I was obsessed with those dipped cones you can get at Dairy Queen. Honestly, I mostly wanted to see the shell harden more than I actually wanted to eat the ice cream.
And then one day, my mom finally agreed to buy it. Mainly because it was on clearance, but it made me so happy.
What happened to it? Well, it stayed in our cupboard forever because we rarely had ice cream in our house. And when we did, I always forgot to use it.
Now as an adult, I can have ice cream whenever I want. And ironically, most of the time we don’t have any ice cream in our freezer. But I’m going to relive my childhood passions, and make a homemade version of the thing I begged my mom for.
Magic Shell Ingredients
You only need 3 simple ingredients to make this homemade magic shell recipe. All you need is:
- semi-sweet chocolate chips: I like doing a mix of 2 types of chocolate chips, but you don’t need to.
- milk chocolate chips: if you wanted a sweeter taste, mix these two. If not, I would just use one type.
- coconut oil: if you like a more intense coconut taste, use virgin coconut oil. If you don’t like the coconut flavor as much, use refined coconut oil.
How does a magic shell work?
Get a bowl of ice cream and pour the liquid chocolate on top of it. Because coconut oil and melted chocolate hardens when it’s cold, it will produce a hard shell on the top of ice cream right away. Just make sure that you are using extra cold ice cream for best results.
Tips
Storage: For best results, store the magic shell ice cream topping in a glass airtight container at room temperature. I love using mason jars, because then you can take off the lid and microwave it in 30-second bursts, mixing until smooth.
Can I use another type of oil? I have been asked many times if you can use canola or sunflower oil instead of coconut oil. The answer is no. The melted coconut oil is the secret ingredient in this recipe.
Experiment with different ice flavors. Based on the ice cream flavor, you will get a completely different experience. My favorite ice cream flavor to pair with this magic shell is vanilla bean or mint chocolate chip.
Variations
Switch up the chocolate chips! If you like a less sweet version, use dark chocolate chips. If you want an extra sweet version, white chocolate chips are the way to go. Or use what you have on hand! I personally love using either peanut butter chips or butterscotch chips.
Add some ice cream toppings. Some shredded coconut, sliced almonds and sprinkles are some great options to put on top of the chocolate coating before it hardens.

I really must make magic shell, I remember as a kid seeing it in the shops. Mum & Dad never bought it because it was expensive. Its crazy simple to make, so thanks for the kick up the bum I have all the ingredients so I am off to make magic shell!

Ahhh!! Well, I’m with your boyfriend on this one – vanilla ice cream before anything else. BUT I do love chocolate on top or mixed in, and I LOVE magic shell. There’s an italian restaurant we went to growing up that introduced me to magic shell. I had no idea coconut oil was what gave it the consistency and let it harden!!! I’ll have to make this for my family.
