Ok, before you judge me for making ice cream in the winter, let me explain myself a little, and give you some reasons as to this is a good idea:
- Because my boyfriend is coming back in 5 days, and he tells me I make the best ice cream (“but what about the other stuff I make?” I whine)
- Because, hey. It’s not even winter (But if it’s cold enough to walk on the ice that was once a fountain or a lake, I think it’s safe to call it winter)
- Because I think that Oreos should be a year-round treat.
My mom on the other hand thinks I’m crazy. When she sees me sitting at the kitchen table drinking some hot tea with a bowl of ice cream (the best combination EVER by the way) she’s always on my back that doing this will make my teeth crack.
I’m not sure how much scientific merit that has, but I don’t think it will stop me from enjoying this combo.
But back to this particular ice cream. Whenever I see Oreos on sale, I can’t resist but to buy a pack (or two..). And when the cashier asks “so, you’re having a party tonight?” I will reply with a sheepish “yeeeaaahhh…”
It’s not an outright lie, because making Oreo ice cream, or any Oreo treat (like my chocolate chip Oreo cookies or even better, my chocolate dipped peanut butter cup Oreos, oh my!) is a party in itself.
So how does this ice cream fare compared to my other ice cream concoctions?
I’m not usually one to pick favorites, but there may be a new favorite ice cream in town.

Oreo Ice Cream
Ingredients
- 2 cups half and half cream
- 2/3 cup granulated sugar
- 4 large egg yolks
- 1 cup whipping cream
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 10 oreos, coarsely crushed
Instructions
- In a medium saucepan, mix together the cream and the sugar until the sugar is melted.
- In a medium bowl, beat together the egg yolks. Slowly mix in half of the warm cream mixture to the egg yolks. Pour the mixture back into the saucepan, and mix until the mixture thickens. Pour into a chilled bowl, and refrigerate until cold.
- Pour the mixture into your ice cream maker and freeze according to manufacturer’s instruction.
- When the ice cream is the consistency of soft serve, stir in the oreos.
- Place the ice cream in an airtight container and freeze until ready to serve.

Looks delicious! Question… what is 'half and half'???
atasteofmadness
Woops. It's half and half cream. Or you can use half whipping cream and half milk
techie2mom
Loved the ice cream, though i am not adventurous enough to try it in winters…

Gosh Cathleen – you know I agree! It is never too cold for ice cream or gelato. Cream, sweet deliciousness is perfect any time of year and this looks fantastic. If you like tea and ice cream – I posted a Chai gelato that is soooo good. Best of both worlds! Hope you have a Merry Christmas and a great visit with your boyfriend.

I am not a huge ice cream eater though Manservant is. However if I bought ice cream i know it would never last 5 days in the freezer! P.S. I love Oreos!

Oreos are a huuuge weakness of mine, it's a good thing I don't have an ice cream maker or this would be happening right now 🙂 My hubby has to have a bowl of ice cream every night – he would love this!

I'm too cold to eat ice cream in the winter, but I still make it every Thanksgiving. I'm a total hypocrite.
