A quick and easy topping for your ice cream. This Peppermint Magic Shell is a great Christmas dessert addition for your holiday gatherings.
It hasn’t even been a week since Halloween and I am already thinking about Christmas. Maybe because of Starbucks releasing their holiday drinks. My cravings always seem to mirror what is being sold at Starbucks, which is pretty annoying if you ask me (and my wallet).
In the past, between Halloween and Christmas I would make my mint chocolate chip ice cream almost every day. But this year, I seem to be always short on time. I may make homemade ice cream occasionally these days, but I am making this Peppermint Magic Shell far more often. This way I can buy my favorite ice cream and make this hard chocolate shell in under 5 minutes using only simple ingredients. In fact, if you wanted some extra peppermint action, I would recommend buying some mint ice cream and drizzling this chocolate magic shell topping over it. Because, ’tis the season!
What is a magic shell?
So you know that chocolate coating covering your vanilla ice cream popsicles? Or that hard shell that covers Dairy Queens vanilla ice cream cones? Well that right there is a magic shell.
You can probably buy a jar of magic shell from your local grocery store. I have seen the Smucker’s Magic Shell fairly often in most grocery stores. However, it doesn’t taste the same in my opinon. Plus, by making it yourself at home you can alter it to however you want.
So when the craving strikes, make some magic shell and drizzle it on top of ice cream of your choice for a delicious treat. I promise you, you won’t want to eat your ice cream any other way.
Be careful with substitutions
The use of coconut oil is required in this recipe. It can be either unrefined or refined coconut oil, but this cannot be substituted for any other oil such as sunflower oil or avocado oil. I have tried in the past, and the magic shell remained at a liquid consistency even when poured over ice cream.
Peppermint Magic Shell Ingredients
You only need a handful of ingredients to make this homemade chocolate magic shell. All you need is:
- milk chocolate chips
- coconut oil
- pure peppermint extract
- crushed candy canes
Tips & Tricks
This recipe is so versatile! You can switch up the chocolate chips to whatever chips you like! I love it with peanut butter chips or butterscotch chips, but you can also be classic and switch it up with dark chocolate chips or white chocolate chips.
Store the leftover magic shell in a mason jar. Because your magic shell will harden at room temperature, placing it in a microwave safe container such as a microwave-safe bowl or mason jar will make it easier to use it again. Just remove the lid, place the mason jar in the microwave and microwave in 20-second intervals until the melted chocolate is smooth.
Make it vegan! Use vegan chocolate chips to make this the perfect topping for your favorite vegan ice cream.
Switch it up with your favorite extracts! Want a more vanilla flavored magic shell? Add in some vanilla beans or some vanilla extract. Someone’s birthday coming up? Try some cake batter extract. The possibilities are endless!
