Easy Puppy Chow recipe, aka muddy buddies. This no bake treat is a classic snack mix, and makes the easiest dessert idea.
I admit, this is a crazy name. Perhaps I need to preface this post by saying that this is not dog food. It is very much people food.
Another thing worth mentioning is, depending on where you grew up, you may have known this snack by other different names. Some names that I have seen people call this cereal mixture is: Muddy Munch, Muddy Buddies, and if you are making them for the holiday season it is often called reindeer chow.
But whatever you call it, I call it the easiest snack that I can make at the last minute. This is a huge hit every time I bring it on a road trip. It is my favorite thing to make for others, and they make great gifts for colleagues or neighbors. The perfect recipe to make for a doggy bag, if you know what I mean.
Best Puppy Chow Ingredients
This homemade puppy chow recipe is made with a couple of common ingredients that you probably have lying around the house. The 6 ingredients that you need are:
- Rice Chex Cereal
- semisweet chocolate chips
- peanut butter (both chunky peanut butter and creamy peanut butter work well here)
- unsalted butter
- vanilla extract
- powdered sugar
That’s it!
Tips
Make sure you have a little more powdered sugar on hand. Oftentimes, when you are mixing all of the ingredients together in the large ziplock bag, some portions of the cereal will not get coated. You can use some leftover powdered sugar in your bag to sprinkle on top when you place the cereal on the baking sheet to cool.
Storage: To store, pour puppy chow into a large airtight container. Keep at room temperature for up to 2 weeks.
Variations
Switch up the flavor for the chocolate coating. I personally love doing a mixture of chocolate chips. Sometimes I mix dark chocolate and milk chocolate chips, or replace all of the chocolate chips for peanut butter chips. Really, anything you have on hand works!
