I have, but only at this artisanal coffee shop that I went to at a Christmas market years ago. But that was so long ago, I knew that I needed to make some of my own.
This Rich Hot Chocolate has got to be one of the best hot chocolate recipes that I have made in a long time. But just a warning: this is real hot chocolate. Meaning it probably won’t be your go-to recipe for hot chocolate since it is so rich and decadent.
So if you want a hot drink recipe for the last few days of winter, this might be the perfect homemade hot chocolate for you.
Rich Hot Chocolate Ingredients
This creamy hot chocolate recipe is just made with 3 simple ingredients, and one of those ingredients is water so does that really count? All you need is:
- hot water
- white sugar
- high quality 100% dark chocolate
Equipment
- small saucepan
- whisk
- coffee mug
Tips
Use different chopped chocolate. While I love using dark chocolate to get that intense chocolate flavor, you can use whatever chocolate bar you have on hand. While a bittersweet chocolate bar will work best, you can use milk chocolate as long as you reduce how much sugar you use. You could also use semisweet chocolate chips if that is all you have on hand, and add sugar to taste.
Add your favorite toppings. Oftentimes I love to enjoy the rich chocolate flavor alone, but if I’m feeling extra fancy I will add some whipped cream or mini marshmallows on top.
Swap out the water. In place of water, you can use a watery type of hot milk. I would recommend skim milk if you can handle dairy, but almond milk or soy milk if you wanted this recipe to be dairy free.
Replace the sugar. Instead of granulated sugar, try using brown sugar or coconut sugar for a more caramel flavor.

Rich Hot Chocolate
Ingredients
- 1 cup water
- 2 Tbsp granulated sugar
- 65 g 100% dark chocolate, melted
Instructions
- In a small saucepan, bring the water and sugar to a boil. Remove from heat.
- Pour in the melted dark chocolate and whisk until combined. Pour into a mug and enjoy!
