Easy Rum Truffles recipe. Made with simple ingredients, this decadent dessert idea makes the perfect gift or sweet treat.
Now that my child turned 2, I am thinking about all of the different kinds of holiday traditions that we will try starting this year.
I kind of want to recreate some of my favorite things about the holiday with my child. Baking cookies for Santa, watching holiday movies and drinking hot chocolate with a good book. Maybe I will add in making these rum truffles to the list, because I am addicted.
These truffles make excellent gifts as well because they do not contain any peanuts or tree nuts so they are fairly safe to give to friends and relatives. Plus they look fancy enough to bring to any special occasions you are invited to at the last minute.
Rum Truffles Ingredients
All you need to make these chocolate rum truffles is:
- heavy cream
- chocolate chips (either milk chocolate or semi-sweet)
- rum (dark rum works well, but any regular rum you have would work)
- unsalted butter
- vanilla extract
- salt
- coconut oil
That’s it!
Tips & Tricks
No rum? No problem! You can use a different alcohol, or skip the alcohol altogether and mix in some brewed coffee.
Make these truffles vegan. Swap the butter for vegan butter and the heavy cream for coconut milk. Then use vegan chocolate chips for a dairy free version.
When forming the rum balls: make sure you have cold hands! If your hands are too warm when forming the balls, it could become a sticky mess. Another tip would be to use a small cookie or ice cream scoop. The hardest part about this recipe is making sure you can form small balls of the same size, and this eliminates guesswork.
Are you a dark chocolate lover? The rum goes so well with dark chocolate. For the chocolate coating, just melt some dark chocolate chips or chopped chocolate with the coconut oil, then follow the directions on the recipe card.
Storage: You can store these rum truffles in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 weeks. Alternatively, you can place them in a freezer bag, and freeze for up to 2 months. When ready to serve, allow the truffles to thaw at room temperature. Just make sure that you don’t store these truffles in a warm area. The texture of the truffle mixture will get very difficult to eat when it isn’t firm.
Make it even more festive! Top with some Christmas or chocolate sprinkles to give these truffles an extra crunch and a more visual appeal.

Yum! I made these for gifts to take to the office today, and wow, they taste great. Just the right amount of rum – you can taste it but it doesn’t overpower the chocolate. Super easy to make too!
