Vegetarian Split Pea Curry recipe. Super easy to make, this makes a great weeknight dinner idea. Can be made with either yellow or green split peas.
Hey look! I make actual food sometimes!
Food that takes freaking 2 hours to make. This is how I spent my lazy Sunday evening. Waiting for this soup to be done. Snacking all the way. But it was so worth it. Because now I have a split pea recipe that doesn’t involve ham, or doesn’t look like a green blog.
Now it just looks like an orange blob. Which somehow is far more appetising to me.
Whenever I make curries, I make them THICK. Thick enough that if you take a spoonful and tilt it 45 degrees, you won’t lose any curry. Yeah. That thick.
For this particular curry? I may have gone a little overboard on the thickness. But also overboard on the taste. In the best way possible.
I am seriously loving everything about this stew. How easy it is (even though it takes a LONG time to make), the texture and how full of flavour it is. But let’s be real here, when you put in both curry paste and curry powder, you know it’s going to turn out flavourful.
If it didn’t take so long to make, I would be making it almost every day on weekdays.
But in all seriousness, I think it’s worth it even though it takes 2 hours to make.
If you are looking through the ingredients list and thinking “what a weird sounding curry. What is evaporated milk doing in a curry recipe?
I mean, okay. I would probably be thinking the exact same thing as you. But the truth is, I really wanted to put coconut milk in mu curry, but I was all out. And evaporated milk and heavy cream (and regular milk) was all that I had. So had to work with what I had.
And I am glad it did. Even though I couldn’t make this vegan as I had intended, it made for a wonderfully warming vegetarian comfort food. Next time I make it, I will try making it vegan. But for now, I am enjoying this on our cold Toronto winters.

Agreed that thick curry or soup or stew is the BEST! This looks so delicious (although I love anything served over rice). What a delicious meatless meal!

Beautiful curry! I love pulses in any form and they make great curries, I really don’t mind if they longer to cook, it is always worth it.
