Easy Tuna Salad Sandwich recipe. This classic lunch idea is the great for a quick and easy nut free meal to take to work or school.
I’m never in a kitchen around lunch. I’m always on the go, and I’m always having to buy something for lunch. This has proved to be a little bit pricey, and hey, I’m writing a food blog! It’s shameful NOT to be making something (not really, sometimes I have an extreme need for a burger or fries. Can’t get around it, they are just so tasty)
While this is not exactly a burger and fries, it is definitely healthier. You can’t go wrong with tuna. Unless the smell of eating tuna salad turns you off. But, strangely enough, I added onions to the mix (because we are now only missing some garlic to make certain no one will to talk to you) and it somehow…masked any strong smell? I’m not sure what it is, but this is the least smelly and favorite Tuna Salad Sandwich I have ever made. It sure beats peanut butter sandwiches, which is my typical sandwich I make myself for school lunches.
Tuna Salad Sandwich Ingredients
You just need a couple of simple ingredients to make this classic tuna salad recipe. All you need for the best tuna salad sandwich is:
- canned tuna
- mayonnaise (can be full fat or light mayo)
- crisp celery
- onion (yellow or red onion)
- fresh lemon juice
- salt
- black pepper
- sandwich bread
That’s it!
Tips
Storage: Any leftover tuna salad can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for 3-4 days.
Choosing what type of tuna to use. It might be confusing when trying to choose a can of tuna at the grocery stores when there are so many varieties to choose from. Because this recipe drains the liquid in the can, it is not necessary to get the oil-packed tuna. The water-packed tuna is the one I typically reach for. If you wanted a tuna with less fat or you are on a low calorie diet, go for the light tuna. But if you want a more traditional tuna salad with a more robust flavor, the albacore tuna is the best kind of tuna for the job.
Variations
Add in some fresh herbs. I love adding fresh dill to my tuna salad sandwiches, but even adding in chopped green onion would elevate this recipe a lot.
Give it an extra crunch. I love adding some chopped dill pickles or some sweet pickle relish for an additional crunch. Any other chopped fresh veggies would be good too, like some red bell pepper or some cucumber.
Switch out the mayonnaise. If you don’t have mayonnaise on hand, there are a lots of options for what you can swap it out for. I usually reach for plain Greek yogurt, but sour cream or miracle whip works well in place of mayo too.
