Simple Vegan Split Pea Soup that is gluten free and super easy to make. Thick and creamy, this is the ultimate comfort food.
I have been on a vegan kick lately.
To be honest, I have always wanted to be vegan. Actually, more vegetarian than vegan only because I love both cheese and baking with eggs. But when I was in high school, I went vegetarian for a year and lost so much weight. You would think that would be a good thing. But I was already known as the skinny kid, so being skinnier was not a look I was going for.
So I started eating meat again so that I could keep up a normal body weight. But now that I am older and I can research what to eat in order to eat healthy and get all the nutrients that I need, I think I might try it out again. Starting with this split pea soup.
I find that for most people I ask, one of the biggest barriers to going vegetarian is the man in their life. It seems like men will always want their meat, and won’t think a meal is complete without it.
So me and John spent the last week eating only vegan food. And frankly, we didn’t miss the meat.
What I was missing was the cheese and the baking, but now that our vegan experiment is over, I can start back on my cookies and cakes and brownies. Just in time for my birthday week!
But this soup is here to stay!
This soup isn’t so great to look at, but it is so good! I always have a bag of split peas in my pantry, which is awesome now that I have this soup recipe in my back pocket! Made with simple ingredients you probably have in your pantry, which include onions, potatoes, vegetable broth and spices.
And it lasts for so freaking long! I love a good soup recipe, but I love it 10x more if I can continue to eat it for dinner throughout the week. That way I can spend less time cooking and more time working on my blog. Or working my regular 9-5.
Yeah.. I do really like to keep myself busy.
Made this soup last night, so I won’t need to worry about what to make for dinner tonight.. then eventually ordering takeout or using UberEats. Just a minute in the microwave, and I have myself a heaping bowl of comfort food. With a side of sourdough. Always.

I love pea soup. In fact, I have a recipe on my site, too. It’s one of those incredibly comforting recipes, and I agree that it’s best when it lasts for a few days. I love the flavors you have going on in your pea soup. It’s unusual to find one that contains oregano and potato. Your soup looks amazing. I will have to give it a try.

Thanks Patti! I hope you give it a try. I actually love that flavour combo 😉

This looks like a nice, thick and delicious soup. Perfect to curl up in front of the TV and eat dinner at the same time.

Haha, I must admit, I have done that this week! Thanks Gloria!

Yes, split pea soup isn’t the most beautiful food ever, but it sure does taste wonderful! Especially on cold days. I like the addition of potato in your version – it makes it even more filling!
atasteofmadness
Thanks Amy!! I am always so hungry after work, I need something filling 🙂
Jeff
This soup looks really hearty. You should show John the movie Scott Pilgrim Versus the Universe, and tell him that if he goes vegan, he’ll get superpowers!
atasteofmadness
Hahah, I have never seen that movie, but that sounds hilarious!

We do a fair amount of vegetarian and vegan meals in my house as well. I love the idea of having a split pea soup without ham. This looks so warm and comforting!
atasteofmadness
Thanks Ashley!! Right? Split pea soup seems to ALWAYS have ham. I wanted a vegan option!
Elaine @ Dishes Delish
Pea soup is one of my favorite soups! Your soup looks so comforting and delicious! I was vegetarian for a number of years and tried being vegan for a few years. It was too extreme for me. I’m back to eating meat, but I do eat vegetarian quite a bit. I look forward to trying your delicious soup!
atasteofmadness
Thanks Elaine. I hope you do! I eat vegetarian quite a bit too. It is so much cheaper 🙂

Your story made me chuckle! I’ve played with vegetarianism a few times in my 58 years, but I just cannot do vegan. Cheese. Eggs. More cheese. However, we do regularly prepare vegetarian dishes (and some are among the most popular on my blog). They can be so healthy! Your vegan split pea soup does look delicious though! Happy baking…
atasteofmadness
Thanks Tamara! I honestly can’t give up the cheese either!
Emma - Bake Then Eat
I’ve been vegetarian for so long now I could never go back. I would love to be vegan but like you, I would miss cheese and eggs. I like playing around with vegan baking but nothing beats a cake made with butter and filled with real cream. I eat more vegan now then ever but I don’t know if I will ever take that final step. Maybe one day? Great looking soup, perfect for winter.
atasteofmadness
I so agree!! Maybe one day, but for now I will enjoy my cheese, butter and eggs!

Have to have pea soup in this cold weather! I haven’t put potatoes in mine – have to try that!

Thanks Anne. It is so good, you must try it with potatoes!
Leslie Haasch
I actually kinda love recipes that taste great but don’t look all that appealing – it just means it’s less likely to get stolen 😉
atasteofmadness
Haha, I like your thinking Leslie!
